Why it matters: a genuine new product update for LDV's seven-seat SUV that broadens the diesel line-up right as other budget Chinese brands are also doubling down on diesel in Australia.

LDV has put turbo-diesel power back into the D90 SUV after about two years away, and used the relaunch to add a new flagship grade. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel now makes 163kW and 520Nm, up from the old 2.0-litre's 160kW and 480Nm, paired with an eight-speed auto and standard four-wheel drive. Braked towing climbs to 3500kg from 3100kg and fuel use drops to a claimed 8.1L/100km. The range grows from three variants to five, topped by a new diesel-only Luxe grade with a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, JBL audio, heated and ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels and front and rear diff locks. A launch offer knocks $4500 off drive-away pricing until 31 October.
