Why it matters: it's the final numbers on Australia's biggest diesel-vehicle defect case, closing out a saga that's dogged Toyota's diesel line-up since 2015, and it's exactly the kind of DPF fault every diesel workshop in the country has dealt with firsthand.

Toyota Australia has agreed to pay up to $750 million to settle two long-running class actions over faulty diesel particulate filters in the HiLux, LandCruiser Prado and Fortuner. The settlement covers 264,170 vehicles bought between October 2015 and April 2020, fitted with the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV or 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engines. The DPFs were prone to clogging and triggering excess fuel dilution, sometimes damaging engines. The Federal Court found a "core defect" back in 2022, and the fight over how much Toyota owed dragged through an appeal and a High Court referral before this settlement. It still needs Federal Court approval. A Toyota spokesperson said the company "has agreed to a settlement in the DPF Class Action case" and apologised for the inconvenience caused. Owners should check with their legal representatives on eligibility.
