FINAL (signed 5 October 2026, temporary through 31 December 2026)

Why it matters: it's a direct, if temporary, federal intervention into how diesel is taxed and policed at the pump.

Workshop/fleet translation: off-road dyed diesel can now run on-highway without the federal highway tax collected immediately, but the tax is deferred, not cancelled, so keep paperwork clean in case it's clawed back.

The White House says the order will save truckers "over 100 dollars per refill" by deferring the federal highway tax on dyed diesel through the end of 2026. Treasury is directed to pause enforcement and explore scrapping the deferred liability altogether. States aren't bound: Texas suspended its own on-road restriction by proclamation (its 20 cent state tax still applies), while California says its on-road ban on dyed diesel stands unchanged.
